Miniature Cows
Small-scale farming's big trend, gentle, manageable, and packed with the personality of their full-sized counterparts.
About our miniature cows
Miniature cows are smaller versions of standard cattle breeds, typically standing 36 to 48 inches tall at the hip and weighing 500 to 800 pounds. About one-third to one-half the size of full-sized cattle, they're selectively bred for compact size while retaining the character of their larger counterparts. Popular breeds at the sanctuary include Miniature Herefords, Miniature Jerseys, and Lowline Angus.

Eight things you might not expect
- 01Affordable to maintain
A miniature cow eats about one-third the amount of a full-sized cow, meaning three minis can graze the same pasture as one standard cow.
- 02Gentle smalls
Miniature cows are known for their calm, friendly temperaments. Many become beloved family pets that enjoy scratches and attention.
- 03Suburban-compatible
With proper zoning, some people keep miniature cows in large backyards, they're docile enough to coexist with neighbors.
- 041–2 gallons of milk per day
Plenty for a family's needs without the overwhelming output of a full-sized dairy cow.
- 05Every breed has a mini
Nearly every standard cattle breed has a miniature version, from fluffy Highlands to spotted Holsteins.
- 06Easier on pastures
Smaller hooves cause less land damage; they're less likely to break fences or equipment.
- 07Some are show animals
There are dedicated competitions, registries, and breed standards just for miniature cattle.
- 08Sort of house-trainable
Not recommended, but some dedicated owners have trained miniature calves to use specific bathroom areas.
